Старая Колымская дорога
Today's Kolyma Highway gained some new routing during its renovation, and now bypasses old road of Kyubyume – Tomtor – Kadykchan. Now known as the Old Summer Road, this historic 400-kilometre route continues to deteriorate and is now one that only the most hardy adventurer should attempt. In dry weather the route from Kyubyume to Tomtor is passable with care and even onwards to the Cold Pole of Oymyakon, the village that holds the unenviable record of the coldest inhabited place on earth, with a record low temperature of -71°С. Past Tomtor the Old Summer Road begins to show its teeth. Crumbling wooden bridges, whole sections of the road washed away. At times of high water levels the road is simply impossible, and even in drier weather on lightweight enduro bikes it takes 2 to 4 days hard labour to pass through 250 kilometres of the famous Kolyma puddles and Yakut swamps between Tomtor and Kadykchan.
